What applies in Europe and Greece
Meal Packs are a sale of food, so the same hygiene and information rules apply as to any other dish you serve. Here are the basics.
European Union
- Directive (EU) 2025/1892: binding targets by the end of 2030, cutting food waste by 10% in processing and manufacturing and by 30% per person in retail, restaurants, food services and households (against the 2021–2023 average). In force since 16/10/2025; Member States must transpose it by 17/6/2027.
- Regulations 178/2002 & 852/2004: food safety, traceability and hygiene (HACCP, cold chain) apply in full to food sold at a discount too.
- Regulation 1169/2011: allergen information is mandatory for non-prepacked food too. After its “use by” date, food is deemed unsafe and must not be supplied.
Greece
- Law 4819/2021, Article 20: preventing waste comes first, followed by donation. The national target is a 30% cut in food waste at retail and consumer level by 2030, compared with 2022.
- Annual reporting: mass-catering businesses with turnover above €500,000, catering firms above €300,000, supermarkets and hotels with more than 100 beds record their food waste and donations on an online platform every year.
- Where Meal Packs help: surplus food gets eaten instead of thrown away, so your business cuts its waste in practice.
Guide to safe Meal Packs
- Only food that is safe to eat, never past its “use by” date.
- Keep cold food cold and hot food hot until pickup.
- Set the pickup window close to closing time so food leaves fresh.
- Share allergen information. For Mystery and Surprise, list what they may contain.
- Use suitable packaging and add reheating instructions if needed.
